June 15, 2026 at 8:00pm
Description:
We love learning and mysteries and so this is one we're really looking forward to! Join author Rachel Hartigan as she discusses her book, "Lost: Amelia Earhart's Three Mysterious Deaths and One Extraordinary Life". Unravel one of history's greatest mysteries in this spellbinding narrative exploring three leading theories of Amelia Earhart’s tragic disappearance. We're sure we all have our ideas on what could have happened to Amelia Earhart so we hope you'll join us for this fascinating conversation! RECORDING NOTE: This program will be recorded. All registrants will receive the recording via email within 48 hours of the program. About Lost: Amelia Earhart's Three Mysterious Deaths and One Extraordinary Life: When Amelia Earhart’s plane disappeared in 1937, the clues poured in, attracting wild conspiracies about her tragic fate. In Lost, former National Geographic reporter Rachel Hartigan delves into Earhart’s disappearance, introducing a host of eccentric characters who have become obsessed with finding the truth. Did the great aviator crash land near the Marshall Islands, only to be captured by Japanese soldiers? Did she manage to land on Nikumaroro Island but die of injury or starvation? Or did she run out of fuel and crash into the ocean? Interspersed with the search for Earhart is the story of her extraordinary life: her unstable childhood, her itinerant early career, and how a PR-savvy publisher transformed her into an aviation icon and became her husband in an unconventional marriage. In the spirit of nonfiction blockbusters like The Lost City of Z, Hartigan draws us into the world of Earhart's devotees and unspools a beguiling tale. The theories lead Hartigan from the pilot's birthplace of Atchison, Kansas to an expedition on a remote Pacific Island, where forensic dogs attempt to recover a potential sample of Earhart’s DNA. As tantilizing new evidence mounts, Hartigan and her fellow investigators descend deeper into a world of conspiracy and obsession. Through its irresistible characters and prodigious research, Lost reveals not just why we remember Amelia Earhart as a trailblazer and adventurer, but why unsolved mysteries keep us forever searching for answers. About Rachel: I've written about everything from the genetics of persimmon trees to the long road to women's suffrage for National Geographic, where I worked as a writer, reporter, and editor from 2012 to 2024. A former editor of the Washington Post's Book World, I also covered education and culture for U.S. News & World Report. Presented in collaboration with the Ashland Public Library and other area libraries.

Zoom Program: Celebrating America's 250th: "Boston, 1776" with author J.D. Dickey

Jun 22 2026
Start
June 22, 2026 at 7:00pm
End
June 22, 2026 at 8:00pm
Description:
We are so pleased to be starting this 9 week series to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and who would be better to kick it off than author J.D. Dickey discussing his book, "Boston, 1776: A Rogue Tour of Revolution City". Relive the chaos, courage, and color of the American Revolution’s capital city while meeting those who led the fight in the nation’s War of Independence. We hope you can join us for this fascinating conversation! RECORDING NOTE: This program will be recorded. All registrants will receive the recording via email within 48 hours of the program. Note: Due to limited space, if you know you cannot make it live do not register with zoom but please fill out THIS FORM to receive the video link. About the book: In Boston, 1776, author J. D. Dickey leads us through the turbulent streets, tub-thumping taverns, and radical strongholds of a town at war with an empire. Far from the powdered wigs and genteel debates of history textbooks, this book guides us through the real Boston of the American Revolution: frenzied, dangerous, and fiercely alive. Join the crowds in taprooms where rebel plots were hatched. Witness mobs rise up over the price of bread. Stand with patriots as they sharpen bayonets on Bunker Hill, and watch as Loyalists get tarred and feathered. Drink the rum made on the town docks, sample the sinful in the city’s back alleys, and gaze at John Hancock’s mansion gleaming above gritty streets filled with the almshouse, workhouse, and jail. From the harbor wharves and seedy brothels to renowned assembly halls like Old South Meetinghouse and Faneuil Hall, Boston, 1776 leads us on a vivid tour of the vital hub of the Revolutionary War. At every stop along the way, we encounter iconic names like Revere and Adams, but also the forgotten men and women who bled and brawled for freedom in every corner of Boston. Upon America’s 250th anniversary, Boston, 1776 portrays the Cradle of Liberty and the American Revolution as never before: raw, radical, and roaring with life. About J.D.: J.D. Dickey is a writer of narrative nonfiction about American history, society and culture. Of his book, Rising in Flames, Harold Holzer in the Wall Street Journal wrote, "No one interested in Sherman’s March should be deprived of his lively narrative. Absolutely spellbinding." Great Boston Fires with Author and Historian David Kruh

Start
June 25, 2026 at 7:00pm
End
June 25, 2026 at 8:00pm
Description:
Join us with Author and Historian David Kruh as we take a look back at the history of fires in Boston, from the many "great" fires in the city's early years to the truly Great Fire of 1872, the Cocoanut Grove tragedy of 1942, and the Hotel Vendome fire of 1972 (which resulted in the deaths of nine brave fire fighters.) How did these fires happen? What was learned and did we use our knowledge to prevent similar catastrophes? Bio: David Kruh is a former New Yorker and a 1978 graduate of the University of Maryland. While earning his Masters in Computer Engineering at Boston University, David worked as an engineer at WRKO Radio. He has also worked full time as a copywriter, computer programmer, radio producer, radio engineer and, for a few years in the mid-1990s, as a spokesman and web master for the Big Dig. He retired a few years ago from a semiconductor manufacturer, where he was the Direct Marketing Manager. He is also the author of several other books, notably two on Boston's Scollay Square and Building Route 128. David's most recent book is Inseparable. The Library is happy to make reasonable accommodations as needed. Please inform the Library two weeks in advance of any needs. Zoom Program: Celebrating America's 250th: Iron in the Water with Adventurer in History Kiersten Marcil

Jul 6 2026
Start
July 6, 2026 at 7:00pm
End
July 6, 2026 at 8:00pm
Description:
We are so pleased to be continuing this 9 week series to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence! We're thrilled to welcome Kiersten Marcil, Author & Adventurer in History to our virtual stage. She will be discussing Iron in the Water: How American Rebels Blocked British Control of the Hudson River - Before the echoes of gunfire at Lexington and Concord had faded, American rebels and the Crown were plotting and vying for control of the Hudson River. This crucial passageway was considered key to transporting men, weapons, food, and morale from the Canadian and Northern Departments to the South. We will delve into primary sources describing the construction of the Montgomery Chain in 1777, plus the Great Chain and its home at West Point in 1778. No such exploration would be complete without a glimpse into the people and politics of such a weighty endeavor. We hope you can join us for this fascinating conversation! RECORDING NOTE: This program will be recorded. All registrants will receive the recording via email within 48 hours of the program. Note: Due to limited space, if you know you cannot make it live do not register with zoom but please fill out THIS FORMto receive the video link. About Kiersten: Kiersten hails from New England and is ridiculously proud of her family’s deep-rooted history in our nation’s foundation. She is a Mayflower descendant of Governor William Bradford (c. Mar. 19, 1590 – May 09, 1657) and great-granddaughter (several generations removed, of course) of Peter Minuit (btn 1580 & 1585 – Aug. 5, 1638). The latter was the Director of the Dutch North American Colony (1626 - 1631), which was part of the Dutch East India Company, and who is credited with the so-called “purchase” of Manhattan Island. Her ancestors braved unknown dangers and a foreign world while creating treaties with the local peoples that survived for years under their leadership.. America’s Birth in Stirring Words

Jul 16 2026
Start
July 16, 2026 at 7:00pm
End
July 16, 2026 at 8:00pm
Description:
America’s Birth in Stirring Words Revolutionary War battles and poems they inspired Presented by Jeffrey Zygmont. Patriots went to war to win freedom. Poets went to work to praise them, and to express the spirit of independence and the valor that created our nation. We review some key battles of the American Revolution – the people, the tactics and outcomes – and follow each battle review with an historic poem that expresses the emotion and devotion of the soldiers. Thus, alongside facts, we experience the energy and enthusiasm that made America. We also get a look at 18th Century weapons, camp practices, home lives and backgrounds of soldiers. Physical props, plus projections that show maps, paintings and other illustrations, make the factual, historic aspects of the presentation easy to grasp and appreciate. All battles featured in the program occurred in and around New England. Poems such as “Molly Maguire at Monmouth” and Longfellow’s “Paul Revere’s Ride” bring the emotion of the conflicts to life. The program is an enjoyable balance between important events in America’s founding, and the poetic words they stirred. Jeffrey Zygmont is a New England writer and poet who has published numerous poetry, fiction and non-fiction books (including children’s books), and short stories. Working as a journalist, he has published articles in a long list of magazines and newspapers. He speaks regularly about poetry and art – especially to promote the works of American poets Emily Dickinson, Edgar Allan Poe and Robert Frost – at venues around New England. Jeff studied engineering and the physical sciences at the United States Military Academy at West Point. He earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, and a master’s degree in English from Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan. She will be discussing the extraordinary efforts of Black Americans whose invaluable contributions during the Revolutionary War helped bring about U.S. Independence. Gracia discusses ALL things history and all things on the origins of the United States even if it is uncomfortable because she believes that that is what leads to a better understanding of this Country and why some things are the way they are. We hope you can join us for this fascinating and important conversation! RECORDING NOTE: This program will be recorded. All registrants will receive the recording via email within 48 hours of the program. Note: Due to limited space, if you know you cannot make it live do not register with zoom but please fill out THIS FORM to receive the video link. About Gracia: I’m Gracia and I LOVE HISTORY! I mean REALLY LOVE IT! My goal is that we can learn and grow together in the fascinating world of American History through the ALL-INCLUSIVE HISTORY that you will find on this site. For me, the real crux of what we know as “American History” is what we are taught about our foundation, the 17th through 19th centuries. So most history featured on these pages will reflect that time period. I have this saying, “I love the Why. I love beginnings, and here is where we find our beginning. What happened in these years brings us to today’s problems.” It all started here and we are going to find out how and why together. I look forward to sharing All-inclusive American History with you.. Description:
We are so pleased to be starting this 9 week series to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. We're thrilled to welcome author and historian Gregory E. O'Malley who will be discussing his book, "The Escapes of David George: An Odyssey of Slavery, Freedom, and the American Revolution" which reveals a remarkable, untold experience of the American revolutionary period—a Black man’s quest for the freedom espoused by our Founders, but denied him and other enslaved people. We hope you can join us for this fascinating conversation! https://danvers.noblenet.org/Record/5508943?searchId=7042834&recordIndex=1&page=1&referred=resultIndex RECORDING NOTE: This program will be recorded. All registrants will receive the recording via email within 48 hours of the program. Note: Due to limited space, if you know you cannot make it live do not register with zoom but please fill out THIS FORM to receive the video link. About the book: When most Americans think of slavery, they do not picture the colonial or revolutionary eras. Yet, in fact, one of six inhabitants of the thirteen original colonies was enslaved. The Escapes of David George: an Odyssey of Slavery, Freedom, and the American Revolution reveals a remarkable, untold experience of the American revolutionary period—a Black man’s quest for the freedom espoused by our Founders, but denied him and other enslaved people. In 1762, at the age of 19, David George escaped from a plantation in Virginia. Running southwest by night, fording rivers and crossing borders, he embarked on a decades-long journey in and out of captivity that spanned multiple colonies and thousands of miles. George lived among White, Black, Creek, and Natchez settlements, fled to the British Army for the promise of liberty, founded what might have been the first Black Baptist church, helped to hack a settlement for refugees out of the Nova Scotia wilderness, and died as a leader of an experimental anti-slavery community in Sierra Leone. Piecing together archival records and David George’s own brief account of his life—the earliest written testimony by a fugitive enslaved person in North America—Gregory O’Malley presents a thrilling narrative and a unique perspective on our nation’s origins, principles, and contradictions.. About Gregory: Greg O’Malley is a historian of slavery, the slave trade, and early America. He is professor and department chair in the History Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz. His first book, Final Passages: The Intercolonial Slave Trade of British America, 1619-1807, received four awards: The America Historical Association’s Forkosch Prize for British history; the AHA’s Rawley Prize for Atlantic history; The Owsley Award from the Southern Historical Association; and the Goveia Prize from the Association of Caribbean Historians. The book examines a brutal network for distributing enslaved Africans throughout North America and the Caribbean after their survival of the Atlantic crossing. O’Malley is also co-creator (with Alex Borucki) of the Intra-American Slave Trade Database, a free online research tool that documents more than 35,000 human trafficking voyages from one port in the Americas to another. His second book, The Escapes of David George: An Odyssey of Slavery, Freedom, and the American Revolution, was published in February by St. Martin’s Press. It offers a life history of a man born enslaved in colonial Virginia, whose attempts to escape bondage resulted in wide-ranging travels, captivities, and re-enslavements, illuminating both enslaved people’s resistance and the powerful barriers to their escape. David George finally found emancipation by fleeing the emerging United States and running to the British Army during the Revolutionary War. Presented in collaboration with the Ashland Public Library and other area libraries.

Description:
The Sons of Liberty are celebrated in the rebellious history of Boston - but what of their sisters? An audacious and determined procession of reformers, socialites, criminals and madams made the city what it is today. One hundred years before Rosa Parks, African American abolitionist Sarah Parker Remond refused to give up her seat while attending a play in Boston. Fiery activists Harriet Hemenway and Minna Hall led a boycott against bird plumage in ladies' dress and brought the fashion industry to its knees. Rachel Wall was the last woman to be hanged in Boston after living life as a pirate. Author Dina Vargo unearths the remarkable stories of the Wild Women of the Hub. Author Dina Vargo developed her interest in Boston’s offbeat history during her time as a tour guide for Boston By Foot. She holds an MPA from the University of Pittsburgh and currently works in the affordable housing field. In addition to Hidden History of Boston, Ms. Vargo is the author of Wild Women of Boston: Mettle and Moxie in the Hub. The Library is happy to make reasonable accommodations as needed. Zoom Program: Celebrating America's 250th: "Act Worthy of Yourselves" with author Salina B. Baker

Aug 10 2026
Start
August 10, 2026 at 7:00pm
End
August 10, 2026 at 8:00pm
Description:
We are so pleased to be starting this 9 week series to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. We're thrilled to welcome author Salina B. Baker who will be discussing her book, "Act Worthy of Yourselves: A Novel of Dr. Joseph Warren and an American Rebellion". This historical biographical novel brings Bostonian Dr. Joseph Warren to life in vivid, intimate detail—a healer who became a warrior, a scholar who became a revolutionary, and a man whose courage helped give birth to a nation. About the book: In the summer of 1755, fourteen-year-old Joseph Warren left his family’s farm in Roxbury, Massachusetts, and walked into destiny when he entered Harvard College. Brilliant, compassionate, and driven by an unshakable belief in liberty, he would become one of the most influential—and tragically overlooked—figures of the American Revolution. A respected Boston physician, Warren healed the sick by day and challenged the British Empire by night. As a leader of the Sons of Liberty and the radical resistance to English rule, he stood at the center of a growing storm. He authored the Suffolk Resolves, a bold declaration that proclaimed colonial defiance and laid the philosophical groundwork for the Declaration of Independence. When the First Continental Congress adopted the Resolves as its first official act, Warren’s words became the voice of a nation not yet born. On the night of April 18, 1775, with British troops preparing to march on Lexington and Concord to seize rebel arms, a decision had to be made—one normally entrusted to a full committee. They were absent. The responsibility fell to Warren alone. In a moment that would change the world, he dispatched Paul Revere and William Dawes on their legendary rides, setting in motion the events that ignited the American Revolutionary War. From his leadership as President of the Massachusetts Provincial Congress and the Committee of Safety, to his role as Grand Master of the Massachusetts Grand Lodge of Masons, Warren believed passionately that all people were entitled to medical care, liberty, property, and the pursuit of happiness. He lived for those ideals. He died for them on the battlefield of Bunker Hill, becoming one of the Revolution’s earliest and most noble martyrs. About Salina: Salina is a multiple award-winning historical fiction author, presenter, and historian of the American Revolution. She has done presentations at places such as History Camp Boston, Valley Forge, Washington Crossing Historic Park, the General Nathanael Greene Homestead, Cowpens National Battlefield, Camden Revolutionary War Visitor Center, and Sons of the American Revolution/Daughters of the American Revolution chapters. She has also been interviewed on podcasts including Revolution 250, American Revolution Podcast, and Emerging Revolutionary War. In addition, she writes articles for the Journal of the American Revolution. Salina lives in Austin, Texas with her loving husband, John. Presented in collaboration with the Ashland Public Library and other area libraries.

To Lily and Hannah, elevating their community is paramount; The shop gives 10% of its proceeds to area nonprofits. Read My Lips' mission addresses a gap the sisters felt growing up. Born deaf, they received cochlear implants as toddlers. Their parents read to them, teaching them speech and fostering a love of reading. Growing up, Lily and Hannah loved romance novels but struggled to find characters they could relate to. They started Read My Lips because they believe everyone deserves to be seen as the hero — not typecast as a villain or sidekick based on white, cis, hetero, straight-bodied and abled standards. Presented in collaboration with the Ashland Public Library and other area libraries.
